سنگ مرمر نوعی سنگ آهکی متراکم است که با نام تجاری Onyx در سراسر جهان شناخته شده است. وجه تسمیه این سنگ از واژه ی یونانی Marmoros به معنی تابنده و درخشان می باشد. سنگ مرمر در برابر شرایط سخت و نا مساعد همچون حرارت ، برودت، نور مستقیم خورشید و باران مقاومت بسیار بالایی دارد. سنگ‌ های مرمر از دگرگونی سنگ آهک به حاصل شده است که مهم‌ترین عنصر تشکیل دهنده ی آن کلسیت نام دارد. هنگامی که سنگ آهک به مدت طولانی تحت فشار زیاد و حرارت قرار می‌گیرد، دگرگون می شود و در نهایت به سنگ مرمر تبدیل می‌شود.

• معایب سنگ مرمریت

  با وجود تمام زیبایی و مزایایی که این سنگ دارد، مانند هر ماده طبیعی دیگری دارای معایبی است که در انتخاب و استفاده از آن باید به آن‌ها توجه کرد. در ادامه به برخی از مهم‌ترین معایب سنگ مرمریت اشاره می‌کنیم:

• به دلیل فرایند استخراج، برش و فرآوری پیچیده، نسبت به بسیاری از سنگ‌های دیگر گران‌ تر است.
• به مواد اسیدی حساس است و در تماس با آن‌ها دچار خوردگی و تغییر رنگ می‌شود. به همین دلیل استفاده از مواد شوینده اسیدی برای تمیز کردن آن توصیه نمی‌شود.
• برخی از انواع این سنگ، به ویژه انواع روشن‌تر، جذب آب بالاتری دارند. این امر می‌تواند باعث ایجاد لکه و تغییر رنگ سنگ شود.
• وجود تخلخل در برخی از انواع این سنگ، باعث می‌شود که آلودگی‌ها به راحتی در آن نفوذ کرده و تمیز کردن آن را دشوار کند.
• در مقایسه با سنگ‌هایی مانند گرانیت، مقاومت سایشی کمتری دارد و در مکان‌هایی که تردد زیاد است، ممکن است دچار ساییدگی شود.
• مرمریت سنگی سنگین است و حمل و نقل و نصب آن نیاز به دقت و تجهیزات خاصی دارد.
• به دلیل حساسیت به تغییرات دمایی و رطوبت، استفاده از این سنگ در فضای خارجی محدود است و ممکن است باعث ترک خوردگی و تغییر رنگ سنگ شود.
• به دلیل حساسیت این سنگ، نگهداری و ترمیم آن هزینه بالایی دارد.
• به صورت طبیعی در اندازه‌های بزرگ و یکپارچه یافت نمی‌شود و ممکن است در برخی طرح‌ها محدودیت‌هایی در اندازه و ابعاد وجود داشته باشد.

در کشور ما معادن متنوع و پراکنده از سنگ مرمر موجود بوده که با تنوع و گستردگی قابل توجهی در اقصی نقاط کشور یافت می شود. استان های شمال غربی و غربی کشور همچون آذربایجان غربی، آذربایجان شرقی ، کردستان ، استان های ناحیه مرکزی کشور همچون اصفهان و کرمان و استان های شمال شرق کشور همچون استان های خراسان رضوی، شمالی و جنوبی و … خاستگاه های سنگ مرمر می باشند. فرآوری این سنگ به صورت تایل و اسلب انجام می شود. در روش اسلب از توری و اپوکسی برای افزایش مقاومت سنگ در برابر شکستگی استفاده می شود که راندمان مناسب تری نسبت به روش تایل دارد.

It is sensitive to acidic materials and corrodes and discolors when in contact with them. For this reason, it is not recommended to use acidic detergents to clean it.
Some types of this stone, especially lighter types, have higher water absorption. This can cause stains and discoloration of the stone.
The porosity of some types of this stone makes it easy for contaminants to penetrate and make it difficult to clean.
Compared to stones such as granite, it has less abrasion resistance and may be subject to abrasion in places with high traffic.
Marble is a heavy stone and its transportation and installation require precision and special equipment.
Due to its sensitivity to temperature and humidity changes, the use of this stone in outdoor spaces is limited and may cause cracking and discoloration of the stone.
Due to the sensitivity of this stone, its maintenance and repair are expensive.
It is not found naturally in large and integrated sizes, and there may be restrictions on size and dimensions in some designs.
